The Devil Inside You

Tony Stark watched his greatest fear become reality – or so he thought. Giant flying machines, worldwide destruction, and the death of the Avengers.

As he watched the nightmare scene unfold Stark walked towards the corpses of his slain friends. His face registered shock when Captain America reached up and grabbed him and demanded to know why he didn’t do anything to save them.

Captain America claimed Stark could have saved everyone, that he could have saved the world. Later in the movie Stark references his vision and how he saw his greatest fear become real.

For Marvel fans seeing a fleet of Chitauri whales flying around, and a giant space portal, is a look into the future of Avengers movies and super-villain Thanos. Including Captain America’s broken shield, and the other dead Avengers.

But for the movie Age of Ultron Stark’s vision carries a much weightier premonition for viewers. If Stark had never had his vision of such a horrible future, it is very possible that he would have never created Ultron.

Stark allowed his obsession with his fear to control him, he truly believed that he could create a program that would end a war before it even started. While Marvel and The Avengers are nothing more then comic books, most of them, this story in particular, carry with them a certain amount of truth and wisdom that can be reflected into our own lives.

Some experts refer to it as self-fulfilling prophecy, and this is exactly what happened to Stark. He was so terrified of his vision, that in turn he created his biggest fear. So many times in life we allow ourselves to not only be controlled by our biggest fear, but in turn our biggest fear is a product of our creation.

Whether it’s fear of sickness, fear of relationships, or fear of failure, by allowing ourselves to obsess over that fear we create that fear.

Stark had no idea Ultron would be corrupt. In his mind he was creating the perfect solution, an antidote for a virus that hadn’t even been discovered yet. Instead Stark become his own worst enemy and created his biggest fear.

As humans we do this daily. We obsess over fears, try and prevent evil before it happens, but many times in the end we create and or cause whatever it was we were afraid of from the beginning.

From a Christian perspective there are so many verses that reference trusting God and not worrying that I won’t even try and list them, because well, you get the point. Not only did Stark obsess over his fear, he tried to be his own God and create his own program that would prevent it from happening.

In reality, nothing we do will prevent or stop God’s will. It may seem a little silly to talk about God and superheroes together, but there is a lesson to be learned here; a lesson of creating our worst nightmares and becoming our own worst enemies.
